RETAIL GARDEN CENTER MANAGER / ASSISTANT BUYER

values on every level. The Ideal candidate has knowledge of Organic,
Sustainable, “Green” Methods, Products and Processes. Ideal
candidates should have at least 2 years of experience in a retail and
client service operation and possess the following:
Strong Leadership Qualities
- Ability to inspire and coach fellow team members
- Ability to schedule and train team members
- Ability to be creative, tactful, and able to handle fast-paced,
client service oriented business with skill, good humor, and effectiveness
Sales Experience
- Proven experience in growing a “green” business
year round by increasing sales and margins in at least 2 of the following
areas:
- Retail garden center sales, including
plant material and pots
- Landscape Design, Custom Orders for
Landscape Clients
- Weddings and Events and Cut Flower
Sales
- Container Gardening sales & service
- Ability to retain and cultivate clients
- Ability to Network Business to Business
- Ability to profitably use our client
email and direct mail lists
- Promotion of Workshops and Events
Buying and Budgeting Ability
- Experience in buying “green” goods
for sales and margin growth
- Ability to discern and find products
to fit the mission of the business
- Experience in buying large trees and
shrubs for landscape design projects
- Experience in negotiating buys, terms
with vendors, accepting deliveries and inventory management of plants,
garden ornament, containers, tools and supplies
Additional Experience
- Knowledge of Macintosh Computer System,
OS X and business/bookkeeping software is a plus; knowledge of POS
systems, management reports, Quickbooks or AccountEdge helpful, knowledge
of Excel, email and web for plant pre-pricing with vendors and internal
budgeting essential;
- Degree or Certificate in Horticulture
or Landscape Design is helpful though not essential
- Proven track record of continuing
education, training and strong desire to learn and share knowledge
